The tile series began with a trip to Catalina
in California. I loved the tiles that were produced in the early 30’s
and brought home a book that featured them. I had worked in high fire
ceramics for 10 years but never low fire, which produces the vivid colors.
The borders that contained them caught my attention and started me thinking
about producing note cards. The square size wasn’t desirable commercially
to produce, so I set them aside. Many years later I had my artwork critiqued
by Ron Pekar in Santa Monica, California and he told me that I painted
like tiles! Soon I was dividing up my watercolor paper into sections and
I loved the effect!
